REMODELING PAYS BACK

What does a remodeling project bring back at resale? That's the question REMODELING MAGAZINE sets out to answer with its now famous annual Cost vs. Value Report.  REMODELING MAGAZINE survey of real estate pros tells you the average return on 16 remodeling projects in 60 regions or cities across the country. The good news this year: It's hard to go wrong when a steady market for resale housing propels record spending on home improvements.

HIGH TECH TIMBER HOMES

There's nothing warmer and more inviting than a home built with lots of wood.  "A timber frame home is a wood house where everyone lives in comfort, surrounded with beauty of wood, experienced craftsmanship, and good design" -Kimihiro Miyasaka, architect, designer, and timber framer.

Tedd Benson, owner of Benson Woodworking  [www.bensonwood.com/bwoodworking/index.html], is considered the modern pioneer in engineered timber structures.  His construction method yields a basically self-supporting framework of timbers fastened with wooden joinery.  As a modern builder practicing an ancient craft, Benson applied modern shop equipment and efficiencies to this old-world trade, also known as post-and-beam.

Don't let the somewhat hard-to-navigate web site stop you from touring some of the beautiful, must-see homes built with this great technique! Even the new New Hampshire shop is a must see!

WARM FLOORS ARE HOT ITEM

Radiant heat is low-cost and easy to install.  That's only one reason why it's Absolute Remodeling heating system of choice.  Best of all, radiant heat provides unparalleled warmth and comfort as it efficiently heat your home.  Our latest kitchen project will be equipped with this astounding product.  You can follow the progress of this kitchen here

According to the manufacturer, "We warm your rooms by circulating heated water (usually at a very economical 110 degrees Fahrenheit) through tough, flexible plastic tubing that's held in place just beneath the surfaces of your floors, walls and ceilings. The warmth from the water quickly spreads out from the tubing, raising the temperature of the surfaces it touches to and even 85 degrees, the same temperature as your bare skin."

Radiant Technology Industry [RDI] is a North American leader in the manufacture of plumbing and heating products.  Learn more how you can use radiant heat floor for your next remodeling project at RTI site [http://www.radiant-tech.com/index.shtml]

CAMOUFLAGE THE GARAGE

This Illinois-based company, CYBIAG Garage Door Systems, pulls a disappearing act with their new door design, blending exterior building components.
Using the same brick, stucco, or other exterior finishes as the house, GarageScape systems are designed to match the exterior fascia of a residence rather than obtrude like an unsightly garage door, especially when the garage door is part of the facade of the house.
"The result is a seamless exterior blend that offers the homeowner more in aesthetics, security, and trouble-free operation", says Tom Lyons, president of the company.
The web site [www.cybiag.com] is a bit cheesy, but still worth a visit.

* NEW!:  TIP OF THE QUARTER *

Before the cold freezing weather sets in, make sure that all the garden hoses outside your home are disconnected.  Failing to do so can cause not only the hose but also the hose bib [also known as 'Sillcock' or outside faucet]  to freeze and be damaged.

This is especially important with anti-freeze hose bib.  The hose must be disconnected to make the faucet freeze-proof.   Failure to do so will trap water in the faucet body, which then can freeze and can even cause interior flooding.  If the hose is disconnected, the anti-freeze faucet can properly drain, and this will prevent freezing.

On non freeze-proof hose bib, you should make sure to shut off the
interior shut off valve [if don't have one, have one installed ASAP] to the hose bib, open the bleeder on the side of the valve [if so equipped] and open the hose bib
so it can properly drain.

* HAVE A $100 DINNER ON US

Are you aware that your recently completed project became "Our Working Showroom"* and you have become "Our Best Salesperson"?

When your support results into a signed project with us, we will show our gratitude to those who recommend us and to those of you who open their doors to let one of our prospective customers see "the Working Showroom"*.

We'll send you to dinner at one of Westchester's premiere restaurants, Peter Pratt's Inn, on us! (A $100 value.  Good for a la carte dining, Tuesdays to Sundays).

Peter Pratt's Inn was recently awarded a four star rating by Gerry Dawes, a writer for The Journal News.  You can find out more by visiting the web site, Peter Pratt's Inn.com.  You'll be able to review the menu and wine list, and even get directions. We recommend printing the map.

Bon Appetit!

*What WE call a "Working Showroom" is an actual, real, functional project (i.e.: kitchen, bathroom) that has been built around existing conditions, restrictions and obstructions, as opposed to those setup showrooms found in retailer's displays where the only limitation is the designer's imagination!
